Team Mexico - January 2011

Six students from USU, a faculty mentor, and a professional engineer traveled to La Salitrera at the start of 2011 to continue mapping out the water distribution system and to perform water quality testing. The team observed high concentrations of arsenic in the water. It was decided that biosand filters would be a good solution since they are easily made and require little maintenance. By request of the La Salitrera community leaders, one prototype biosand filter was made for a family in the adjacent village, Dos Rios. This would soon trigger many advancements of biosand filters in future trips.
